Cliff Tan

Cliff Tan is East Asian Head of Global Markets Research based in Hong Kong. His division is responsible for providing MUFG’s customers with authoritative and insightful commentary and analysis, focusing mainly on the foreign exchange and interest rate markets, macro-economics
and trends.

Mr. Tan has more than 20 years of work experience in markets, the public sector and academia. In the markets, he has served as Managing Director and Head of G10 and EM FX Research at Societé Generale; head of Asian local markets strategy at Citigroup; FX/Rates
Strategist and co-head of Asian Economics at Warburg Dillon Read (now UBS); Japan/Asia Economist at Wellington Management Company in Boston; and proprietary trading economist at Bankers Trust Company.

Mr. Tan has been voted a top five currency strategist by Asiamoney (including a #1 ranking in 2003; #2 rankings in the Global Renminbi poll for 2016 and 2018, and #3 rankings in 2013 and 2014). He was also an Honorable Mention in The Asset’s 2006 “Best Sellside Individuals in Asian G3 Bonds” poll in 2006.

In government, Mr. Tan served as the Greater China economist of the US Federal Reserve Board. In academia, Mr. Tan was Visiting Fellow at the Korea Development Institute, Lecturer for the University of Hong Kong and Consulting Professor at Stanford University.

Mr. Tan has an undergraduate degree from the University of Southern California and graduate degrees from Harvard and Yale Universities. He has throughout his career been a frequent guest on Bloomberg and CNBC television and Bloomberg Radio and is quoted regularly on
Bloomberg and Reuters wires as well as in newspapers and magazines including the Financial Times, The New York Times, The Washington Post, International Financing Review, Business Times (Singapore) and the South China Morning Post.
